they which do such things

If I were rich in dollars (in addition to love), I would have bought a massive bouquet of peonies at the farmers market on Saturday. I mean, HUGE. But for once in my life I showed some restraint.

Which I now regret like other people regret benders and binges and bad cases of crabs.

  1. "Pe-OWN-ies," my mother corrected me this weekend.

  2. Point of order. . .Is there such a thing as a good case of crabs? Assuming we're not speaking of the Maryland or Dungeness edible varieties, of course.

  3. Maybe you could make several copies of this photo, cut carefully around the edges, adhere to green pipe cleaners, place in a vase.... and voila, your beautifully expensive peony bouquet! Gone are all regrets and it will last ALL summer!!

  4. J Quizzle, I almost called the post "pee-OWN-ies," but then I thought only you and me and your mom would get it (which is probably the case for most of the jokes I make here).

Excellent point, William. Thankfully, this is not my area of expertise, but I'll assume you're correct.

Challah, this is why I'm seriously considering hiring you. I can't cover relocation expenses and your salary will be paid in Jim Beam, but if you want to move back East you have a job waiting for you at GFD.

  5. Life is short, too short for regrets, and peonies are only once a year.

  6. That's an excellent point, DED. Life is too short not to splurge on peonies.

  7. I have peonies coming out of my ears, you can come by and cut a big bunch.

  8. I'm there, Anonymous. Except I don't know who you are. So perhaps I'll just start clipping peonies at random and hope that all the anonymous people in their homes who are NOT you don't call the police. Whatever. Peonies are worth a few hours in the clink.

  9. I'm on South Union, across from Adams School. I'll cut a bunch and put them on the front porch and you can pick them up on your way to the farmer's mkt on Saturday.

  10. The flowers are beautiful, Anonymous, thank you so much. They're now sitting in a pretty blue vase on my kitchen table, and the sight of them gives me pleasure each time I pass by.
