it's also good eaten straight from the jar with a spoon

Do you know what this is?

It's a strawberry dipped in raw cream.

Do you know what raw cream is? It's the cream from raw (unpasteurized) milk.

Do you know how raw cream is made? After someone not scared of cows does the milking and sells the resulting product to your mother-in-law, who gives a jar to you, you put the milk in the fridge and the cream rises to the top. "Elementary, my dear Kate," you're probably thinking in the British accent you use for internal dialogue, and it is sort of fourth-grade science, or the kind of tale your grandmother would tell while you sat at her kitchen table eating Lucky Charms for dinner because you were not allowed to have sugar cereals at home, and though that's how they may have eaten their Lucky Charms in the olden days, you did not like the idea of adding milk straight from the cow to your verboten pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers.

But when it's happening in your fridge, this separation of milk and cream, it seems magical (especially when the only kind of magic your fridge has seen before involved mold and the yachtsman's leftovers). And when you skim a fresh, local strawberry over that thick layer of cream and pop it in your mouth, the result isn't just magical, it's magically delicious.

the frog ate my cupcake

We went to the Adirondacks on Saturday, where a four-year-old made cupcakes while I bathed in a claw-foot tub. Maybe we should have kids.

Fellow egg worshiper and niece Lucy.

The yellow color is from those fresh egg yolks.

I don't think child labor laws were broken if she didn't get paid.

Cupcake with a view.

the kitchen table

Last night I met my friend Lisa for dinner at the Kitchen Table in Richmond, and I was not sorry. The food was delicious, the company wonderful, the air scented slightly with manure from the farm next door. And when I drove home at 9:15, there was still light in the sky. A perfect evening, really.

My dinner: A roasted-herb polenta cake with sauteed baby beet greens, beets, and feta cheese. The entree's fluffy hat is made of microgreens from Half Pint.

Lisa's dinner: Scallops or some shizz.

Dessert: Southern chocolate cake, whatever that means, with cherry ice cream and zinfandel cherries.

new mexico

We went on a field trip yesterday, first to a spa in Ojo Caliente, New Mexico, where we soaked in soda, iron, arsenic, and, um, lithium, then to the Taos pueblo, and finally into Taos, where the highlights included (1) paying a hotel clerk $3 to escort us to a back room where she pulled a curtain to reveal nine naughty D.H. Lawrence paintings, and (2) green chile, margaritas, and country music at the Taos Inn.

You can look at pueblo photos here and skip the otherwise mandatory vacation slide show when I get home. They're mostly of dogs...

and doors.

The best part of the whole place was the one thing we weren't allowed to photograph, the interior of the church, but someone apparently disregarded the many warnings not to take pictures, and you can get an idea of what it looks like here.
