happy new year

Here's a toast to 2011, GFD'ers,

specifically toast made from this bread,

baked by the yachtsman on the first day of the year. (If you're still working on your resolutions for the new year, I recommend resolving to marry a man who bakes.)

And a toast to 2010, too, a year in which I ate a lot.

A lot of toast, a lot of soup, a lot of strawberries and apples, a lot of kale, a lot of whoopie pies and shortbread, a lot of gruel for dinner.

I'm in no way resolving to consume less in 2011, by the way. My resolutions for the new year are all about more: more reading and writing and cooking, more long walks with my long dog, more lazy mornings of toast and tea with the yachtsman, more posts to this bl*g. Because I miss you, bitches. A toast to you, then:

Thanks for reading in 2010. Thanks for commenting, thanks for trying the recipes you read here, thanks for letting me know what you liked and what you didn't. Thanks for the beautiful flowers. Thanks for guest bl*gging. Thanks for joining the club. Thanks for posting links to GFD on your own bl*gs and Facebook pages. Thanks for your patience when I went weeks without posting, and thanks for complaining when I went weeks without posting.

I started Gruel for Dinner as a way to catalog what I was cooking: I continue to post because of you. So thanks—no, seriously: thanks—for being here.

  2. Oh, thank goodness, there you are---I was about to send a search party out to look for you.

Marry a man who bakes...an excellent goal. I'll add it to the list. In the meantime, once again you've inspired me---to go out and make some toast and spread some of the homemade raspberry jam I got for Christmas all over it.

You, m'dear are a bad influence. And I mean that in the best possible way. Happy New Year!

  3. Thank YOU gfd. And especially thank you for the recipe index, since I regularly search for something gruelish (and delicious) to cook that I remember reading on ye olde blog.

Do you think the yachtsman might consider doing a tiny mail order on that bread?

  4. Chicken Soup!!!
I got turned onto this here bl*g by your sister (via facebook, of course). Anyways, its great to read and laugh. Next step: make some of the recipes. Step after that: marry someone who bakes (still searching for that certain someone).
    Happy New Year!

  5. I add to your resolutions....more travel to see your beloved friends! As for my resolutions, they are to keep you on track with your resolutions and I guess to teach my husband how to bake - I may have married too impulsively without thoroughly evaluating his kitchen skills.

  6. Thank YOU for being a friend, blog mistress. We've traveled down the road and back again. Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant.

And if you threw a party? Invited everyone you knew? You would see the biggest gift would be from me, and the card attached would say, "Thank you for being a friend."

  7. I agree, His Momma, and our mutual connoisseurship of breads clearly overcomes any potential bias we might share.

Happy New Year to you, too, DED! I'm happy to be a bad influence (so much more interesting than being a good one) and hope you enjoyed the jam. Also, everyone deserves a husband who bakes -- as they say, a chicken in every pot, a baking husband at every oven.

E Biddie, I'm not sure about mail order, but I'm pretty sure I could arrange for a home delivery...

Chicken Soup! I thought of you, and of math class, when I made this soup last year: http://gruelfordinner.blogspot.com/2009/07/rebellion.html I hope you're well and enjoying 2011!

I'm happy to hear you're in charge of my resolutions, Challah, and am assuming you'll be rousting me out of bed and onto my yoga mat every morning (after yoga I'm thinking coffeecake and the crossword are in order?). Also, you definitely married a little impulsively. I mean, how long were you and that guy (what's his name, again?) together before you wed? A week? Ten days?

I love you, J Quizzle. LOVE YOU.

  8. Too long between posts this time. I tried the "report abuse" link but there was no category for Not Changing Picture Of Santa Post. Thanks for the lip service though. Marry a man who gets baked indeed.
